Since 2013, the Macquarie Undergraduate Research Internship (MURI) has engaged over 70 students from equity backgrounds to work under the guidance of academics in paid research opportunities. MURI has successfully empowered students to connect research skills with practical applications alongside developing professional research contacts and networks
MURI is a Widening Participation initiative funded by the Commonwealth Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) that seeks to enhance students’ access to educational opportunities and pathways to further study by encouraging student confidence in their capacity to pursue educational goals.
Positive Impact
Past student participants have reported that they felt an increased academic engagement and confidence, as well as professional and personal growth following their participation in MURI.
“I feel so incredibly proud of the development that I have undergone through the program. I have a lot more confidence in conducting research, liaising with academics, building a professional network, learning how to best manage a life in research… this experience has personally been the most rewarding experience so far this year” MURI participant, 2018
MURI Re-design
COVID-19 disrupted the delivery of MURI in 2021 but enabled the Widening Participation Unit (WPU) valuable time to reinvigorate the successful program to enable its return in 2022. Beginning in Session 1, 2022, WPU will be offering 10 places for domestic undergraduate students to participate in MURI, along with a further 10 places in Session 2. Each student will be eligible to receive a stipend.
During the 10 week program, students are paired with academic mentors who provide guidance and support as students spend time each week working on research projects directed by their mentors. In addition, students attend a selection of workshops developed in collaboration with offices across MQ. In workshops, students grow their knowledge of research landscapes and connect with representatives from a range of research related fields such as Research Services and Campus Well Being. Skill development is further encouraged through access to Digital Resource Skills packs.
Participation in the program is celebrated at a research presentation and networking event at the conclusion of the program.
Collaborate with MURI
The program is currently looking to engage academics interested in participating in MURI as academic mentors in S1 & S2 2022. A program information session will be held on Thursday 21st October at 10 am. Register your interest in attending here.
Alternatively, you can register as an academic mentor here.
